In Hong Kong, cutting-edge dance music is synonymous with his name, throughout Asia he is viewed as a leader in the development of the regions dance music scene and in Europe he has established a reputation as a professional that deserves a place among the world’s top DJ’s. Beyond all these accolades, the sound of Joel Lai speaks for itself – deep, smooth, uncompromising.

Hong Kong born Joel Lai began DJing in the territories night-clubs and private parties 15 years ago. At the time, his tools were limited – no vinyl, only cassette tapes “I just used a pencil to make it slower or make it faster”. A pioneer of the underground dance scene, he was the first to bring the club culture and sounds of the UK to Hong Kong. Since then he has continued to embrace all that the international arena has to offer and continue to mold the Hong Kong market, turning this former colony into one of the most progressive and exciting dance scene in Asia.

As Paul Oakenfold said at the time of the Unity party to mark Hong Kong’s handover to Chinese sovereignty in 1997, “Joel Lai can hold his own with the European DJ’s”*. He has played alongside the biggest names in the industry and continues to tour though-out Asia and Europe in major venues such as the Ministry of Sound, The End, Heaven, Lulu in Germany, Singapore’s Zouk and Tokyo’s Loop – to name a few.

In May 2003, Joel (along with drop co-resident DJ Gruv) released drop IN, his third compilation dance CD. Reflecting his cutting-edge style, drop IN features tracks licensed from a number of well-known independent dance labels, this is undoubtedly his most progressive and stylized work to date. Intentionally released in limited production, drop IN sold out within months of its release. Assisted by reviews stating, there is no doubt why Joel remains in such high demand.
