Linea Sugbuana by Dexter Alazas

11 September 2008 3,418 views 17 Comments

With the advent of haute couture blossoming into Gossip Girl aficionados, we’d rather be wearing the latest oversized headband than be caught dead with last season’s skinnies. Only a true Cebuano could actually sow influence among the few. He will make us go back to our roots and cultivate it. Dexter Alazas brought us back to old style Cebu without even moving any step backward. Before ooh-aahing his newest collection, see Dexter Alazas’ Linea Sugbuana as captured by Joseph Ong.

“LINEA SUGBUANA is my new line,” explains Dexter. “…very Filpino inspired… tradition with a modern treatment… laser cut techniques… (all) done in a more contemporary way.”

See the crochet, embroidery, beading and hand painting – there is a handcrafted element to it and they are all done by hand.

“It’s my dream to bring back the love for Cebu and the search for Cebu’s identity,” Dexter further claims. “LINEA SUGBUANA can be the alternative term to the traditional FILIPINANA so that someday the word will be synonymous to FILIPINO FASHION.” I love that part, Dex. This collection is interpreted in different ways from couture to museum pieces, novelty items to souvenirs. Note:  PANUELOS, HAND FANS, TAPIS, PARASOL, TO SARONGS, MINI MESTIZA SLEEVE BOLEROS, and formal ensemble for men and women.

Novelty items will be displayed in shops and specialty stores soon and in the malls early next year to cater to a wider market. Made to measure orders can be produced on exclusive one-of-a-kind pieces with a more customized approach.

The Dexter Alazas Linea Sugbuana collection pays homage to the modern Cebuana and gives tribute to women who have kept the Cebuano flair by keeping some of the tradition even if new trends are being introduced. Linea Sugbuana defined a bold fashion statement that is truly Cebuana.

A lot of fashion icons publicly claim authority of the style that they express when in fact they patronize not the local designers but foreign brands and international names. If you wear something so Cebu, then that is a different case.

Models from AD are Nikki Taylor and Loise Tan. Stylecebu would like to thank Joseph Ong for his photos. :)

Absolutely beautiful work of art Filipinos can all be proud. Very nice indeed. I love the laser cut, handpainting, the color scheme, the feminine graciousness, but not too overwhelming. Wish I could have a line of cocktail dresses with such fine touches for many more people to see Dexter’s work of art. I hope to see Dexter’s creations when I go home.
